In previous post we had looked at facts about Danav Durgam- whose acts caused drought of 100 years, Goddess Shakambari – who slained Danav Durgam and gifted Sambhar lake to the drought affected people of area. In that way word Sambhar and Sikar have roots in Goddess Shakambari.
Now let us look at another legend connecting Sambhar, Druoght, Davav Goddess Danu and her son Vritra. The legend is also clue to history. As per legend ….
In the early vedic religion, Vritra , is an Asura and also a Serpant or Dragon, the personification of drought and enemy of Indra. Vritra was also known in the Vedas as Ahi (“snake”). He appears as a dragon blocking the course of the Rivers and is heroically slain by Indra.
According to the Rigveda, Vritra kept the Waters of the world captive until he was killed by Indra, who destroyed all the ninety-nine fortresses of Vritra (although the fortresses are sometimes attributed to Sambhar) before liberating the imprisoned rivers. For this feat, Indra became known as Vritrahan “slayer of Vritra” and also as “slayer of the first-born of dragons”.
Vritra’s mother Danu
Vritra’s mother, Danu (who was also the mother of the Danava race of Asuras), was then attacked and defeated by Indra with his thunderbolt. In one of the versions of the story, three Devas – Varuna, Soma and Agni – were coaxed by Indra into aiding him in the fight against Vritra whereas before they had been on the side of the demon (whom they called “Father”).
And now Danube……
The Danube is Europe’s second longest river after the Volga. The river originates in the Black Forest mountain range in Germany as the much smaller Brigach and Breg rivers which join at the German town of Donaueschingen. After that it is known as the Danube and flows southeastward for a distance of some 2,872 km
The name Danuvius is presumably a loan from Celtic (Gaulish), or possibly Iranic. It is one of a number of river names derived from a Proto-Indo- European language word *danu, apparently a term for “river”, but possibly also of a primeval cosmic river, and of a Vedic river goddess .
Danu, a Hindu primordial goddess, is mentioned in the Rigveda, mother of the Danavas. The word Danu described the primeval waters which this deity perhaps embodied. In the Rigveda (I.32.9), she is identified as the mother of Vrtra, the demonic serpent slain by Indra. In later Hinduism, she becomes the daughter of Daksha and the consort of Kasyapa.
As a word for “rain” or “liquid”, danu is compared to Avestan Danu “river”, and further to river names like Don, Danube, Dneiper, Dniester, etc. There is also a Danu river in Nepal.
As a Hindu goddess, D?nu has 2 temples in Bali, Indonesia.
Hindu mythology and Danu
The Valley of Kashmir is named after Kashyap Rishi. He was one of the Saptarshi and a Saraswat Brahmin by caste. According to Hindu Mythology, he is the son of Marichi, one of the ten sons (Maanasa-putras) of the Creator Brahma. The prajapati Daksha gave his thirteen daughters (Aditi,Diti,Kadru,Danu,Arishta,Surasa,Surabhi,Vinata,Tamra, Krodhavasa, Ida,Khas and Muni in marriage to Kashyapa.
- His sons from Aditi or Adityas (Sons of Aditi)- were, Amsa,Aryaman, Bhaga ,Dhuti, Mitra,Pusan,Sakra, Savitr, Tvastr,Varuna, Visnu and vivasvat or Vivasvan who went on to start the Solar Dynasty (Suryavansha), which later came to be known as Ikshvaku Dynasty, after his great grandson, King Ikshvaku, whose subsequent kings were, Kukshi, Vikukshi, Bana, Anaranya, Prithu, Trishanku, and finally King Raghu, who gave it the name, Raghuvansh (Dynasty of Raghu), and then further leading up to Lord Ram, the son of Dashrath.
- His sons from Diti were, Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha and a daughter Sinhika, who later became the wife of Viprachitti. Hiranyakashipu had four sons, Anuhlada, Hlada, Prahlada and Sanhlada, who further extended the Daitya.
- Garuda and Aruna are the sons of Kashyap from his wife, Vinata.
- The Nagas (serpents) are his sons from Kadru.
- The Danavas are his sons from Danu.
- The Bhagavata Purana states that the Apsara were born from Kashyap and Muni.
Kashyap was one of the seven Sages for that manvantara known as Saptrishis. The Indian valley of Kashmir in the Himalayas is named after him.
Goddess Danu is strongly associated with the Tuatha de Dannan, which means “The Children of Danu.” The Tuatha de Dannan are believed to have been the wise ones, the alchemists of ancient Ireland. Some references have them as actual descendants of Danu. It is believed that when the Gaelics invaded Ireland, the Tuatha de Dannan shape shifted to the Sidhe (shee) who are considered the “farey folk” or the Leprechauns of Ireland.
In Irish mythology, Danu is the mother goddess of the Tuatha de Dannan (Old Irish: “The peoples of the goddess Danu”). Though primarily seen as an ancestral figure, some Victorian sources also associate her with the land.
The Vltava is the longest river in the Czech republic. In ancient time the land was called Bohemia. Both the Czech name Vltava and the German name Moldau are believed to originate from the Old Germanic words “wilt ahwa “(Vltava) is starting its way in the southern part of the Prague, then continues almost straight to the north. In the historic centre of Prague, between the Old and New City.
Both sides of the Prague, which is Vltava cutting through, are connected with twenty bridges.
Vyšehrad is a Castle located in the city of Prague. It was probably built in the 10th century, Local legend holds that Vyšehrad was the location of the first settlement which later became Prague, though thus far this claim remains unsubstantiated.
As per Hindu mythology Indra descends from an Indo-Iranian God known as *vrtra-g’han- (wltro-gwhen-) “slayer of the blocker”.
Boii tribe / Betuwe/Bohamia/ Betwa river
We have gone through facts about Boii Germanic tribe in previous post about Bohamia. The same Boii tribe came from Betuwe province of ancient Germany and Founded Bohamia , Prar and Vyšehrad. Boii tribe is clue to history of Betuwe ,Bohamia and Vyšehrad . They were called Batavians in Germaic History. History says that…..
The Betuwe (from batawja, “good island”, from Germanic bat- “good, excellent” and awj? “island, land near water”) is an area in the Netherlands. Tacitus knew it asInsula Batavorum (“Island of the Batavians,” the Germanic tribe from which the modern name is derived) and indeed it could be considered a large river island.
Vyšehrad or Vidisha? Betwa or Betuwe
Batavian tribe Boii reached the present day Czechoslavia (Original Bohamia) and founded kingdom of Bohamia. The same Bohamia latter on took the form of Byzantine empire. Asia bhi hota hai?
Several Germanic groups settled south of the Rhine at the beginning of the Roman settlement, and formed the Germanic tribes of the Batavians and the Toxandri. The Batavians were regarded as good soldiers and fought in many important wars, for instance the conquest of Dacia (Romania)(Daksha? Daitya?) by the emperor Trajan. The Batavians were regarded as the “true” forefathers of the Dutch, as reflected in the name of the later Batavian Republic. These Batavians were replaced or absorbed by the Salian Franks who originally came from Overijssel and beyond, as attested by the geographical area of Salland. These Germanic people were worship of the COW and and FERTILITY GODS that distinguish them from their Germanic neighbours. The Dutch language as it emerged in history derived from the language of the Franks.
Tiel is the largest town in the Betuwe area, which is famous for being one of the centres of Dutch fruit production.. Tiel is one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands. (There was Tel river civilization in ancient orissa)
Vltva or vetravati?
The Betwa is a river in Northern India, and a tributary of the Yamuna. Also known as the Vetravati, the Betwa rises in the Vindhya Range in Madhya Pradesh . In Sanskrit ‘Betwa’ is ‘Vetravati’ which means ‘containing reeds’. This river is mentioned in the epic Mahabharat along with the Charmavati river. Both are tributaries of Yamuna. Vetravati was also known as Shuktimati. The capital of Chedi kingdom was on the banks of this river.
Vyšehrad was the location of the first settlement which later became Prague while there is Vidisha on bank of Betava river.Though the ancient and also the present name of the city is Vidish? or Vidisha in the medieval times, it was also known as Bhilsa for sometime. It is a city in the state of Madhya pradesh, India.
Vidisha is exceptionally rich in ancient monuments and historic places. A short distance to the north of the present town are the remains of the ancient town, known as Besnagar. Not far from Besnagar are theUdyaagiri Caves with sculptures and inscriptions dating to the time of the Gupta Empire. The town is situated east of the Betwa river, in the fork of the Betwa and Bes rivers, 10 km from Sanchi. The town of Besnagar, 3 km from present-day Vidisha on the west side of the river, became an important trade center in the 6th and 5th centuries BCE. The Emperor Ashoka was the governor of Vidisha and it finds mention in Kalidasa’s immortal Meghdoot. Remember that German poet Gate danced after reading Meghdoot.

All roads go to Haihaya
The Haihayas were an ancient confederacy of five ganas (clans) , who claimed their common ancestry from Yadu. According to the Harivansha Purana (34.1898) Haihaya was the great grandson of Yadu and grandson of Sahasrajit. In the Vishnu purana (IV.11), all the five Haihaya clans are mentioned together as the Talajanghas (Germany?). The five Haihaya clans were Vitihotra (River River Vlatva ?) , Sharyata (mentioned elsewhere in the Puranas as the descendants of Sharyati, a son of Vaivasvata Manu), Bhoja (Bohamia ?Boii tribe ?), Avanti (Avanticum in present switzerland?)and Tundikera. The Haihayas migrated from the west to the present-day Malwa region of Western Madhya pradesh). The Puranas style the Haihayas as the first ruling dynasty of Avanti.
Vitahavyas/ / wiltahwa
Udyana and Vasvadatta story says that Vatsa and Haihya (Avanti) were allied kingdom. Haihayas and Talajanghas known collectively as Vitahavyas, under their king named Vitahavya, attacked the neignboring country called Kasi, during the reign of four successive generations of Kasi kings viz that of Haryaswa, Sudeva, Divodasa and Pratarddana. The last one among them, viz Pratarddana, defeated the Haihayas and probably expelled them from the Vatsa kingdom. Czech (Bohamia) River Vltva says the story of Haihaya and Talajanghas, who were known collectively Vitahavyas
