In previous post we had looked at facts about Danav Durgam- whose acts caused drought of 100 years, Goddess Shakambari – who slained Danav Durgam and gifted Sambhar lake to the drought affected people of area. In that way word Sambhar and Sikar have roots in Goddess Shakambari.

Now let us look at another legend connecting Sambhar, Druoght, Davav Goddess Danu and her son Vritra. The legend is also clue to history. As per legend ….
In the early vedic religion, Vritra , is an Asura and also a Serpant or Dragon, the personification of drought and enemy of Indra. Vritra was also known in the Vedas as Ahi (“snake”). He appears as a dragon blocking the course of the Rivers and is heroically slain by Indra.

killing-vritra

Vritra - son of Danav mata Danu

According to the Rigveda, Vritra kept the Waters of the world captive until he was killed by Indra, who destroyed all the ninety-nine fortresses of Vritra (although the fortresses are sometimes attributed to Sambhar) before liberating the imprisoned rivers. For this feat, Indra became known as Vritrahan “slayer of Vritra” and also as “slayer of the first-born of dragons”.
Vritra’s mother Danu

Vritra’s mother, Danu (who was also the mother of the Danava race of Asuras), was then attacked and defeated by Indra with his thunderbolt. In one of the versions of the story, three Devas – Varuna, Soma and Agni – were coaxed by Indra into aiding him in the fight against Vritra whereas before they had been on the side of the demon (whom they called “Father”).

Goddess Danu

Celtic Goddess Danu - gives name to Danube

And now Danube……

The Danube is Europe’s second longest river after the Volga. The river originates in the Black Forest mountain range in Germany as the much smaller Brigach and Breg rivers which join at the German town of Donaueschingen. After that it is known as the Danube and flows southeastward for a distance of some 2,872 km

The name Danuvius is presumably a loan from Celtic (Gaulish), or possibly Iranic. It is one of a number of river names derived from a Proto-Indo- European language word *danu, apparently a term for “river”, but possibly also of a primeval cosmic river, and of a Vedic river goddess .
Danu, a Hindu primordial goddess, is mentioned in the Rigveda, mother of the Danavas. The word Danu described the primeval waters which this deity perhaps embodied. In the Rigveda (I.32.9), she is identified as the mother of Vrtra, the demonic serpent slain by Indra. In later Hinduism, she becomes the daughter of Daksha and the consort of Kasyapa.
As a word for “rain” or “liquid”, danu is compared to Avestan Danu “river”, and further to river names like Don, Danube, Dneiper, Dniester, etc. There is also a Danu river in Nepal.
As a Hindu goddess, D?nu has 2 temples in Bali, Indonesia.
Hindu mythology and Danu

The Valley of Kashmir is named after Kashyap Rishi. He was one of the Saptarshi and a Saraswat Brahmin by caste. According to Hindu Mythology, he is the son of Marichi, one of the ten sons (Maanasa-putras) of the Creator Brahma. The prajapati Daksha gave his thirteen daughters (Aditi,Diti,Kadru,Danu,Arishta,Surasa,Surabhi,Vinata,Tamra, Krodhavasa, Ida,Khas and Muni in marriage to Kashyapa.

kashyap Rishi -creator of Races

The Danavas are Kahsyap Rushi's sons from Danu.

– His sons from Aditi or Adityas (Sons of Aditi)- were, Amsa,Aryaman, Bhaga ,Dhuti, Mitra,Pusan,Sakra, Savitr, Tvastr,Varuna, Visnu and vivasvat or Vivasvan who went on to start the Solar Dynasty (Suryavansha), which later came to be known as Ikshvaku Dynasty, after his great grandson, King Ikshvaku, whose subsequent kings were, Kukshi, Vikukshi, Bana, Anaranya, Prithu, Trishanku, and finally King Raghu, who gave it the name, Raghuvansh (Dynasty of Raghu), and then further leading up to Lord Ram, the son of Dashrath.

– His sons from Diti were, Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha and a daughter Sinhika, who later became the wife of Viprachitti. Hiranyakashipu had four sons, Anuhlada, Hlada, Prahlada and Sanhlada, who further extended the Daitya.
– Garuda and Aruna are the sons of Kashyap from his wife, Vinata.
– The Nagas (serpents) are his sons from Kadru.
– The Danavas are his sons from Danu.
– The Bhagavata Purana states that the Apsara were born from Kashyap and Muni.
Kashyap was one of the seven Sages for that manvantara known as Saptrishis. The Indian valley of Kashmir in the Himalayas is named after him.
Irish mythology

Goddess Danu is strongly associated with the Tuatha de Dannan, which means “The Children of Danu.” The Tuatha de Dannan are believed to have been the wise ones, the alchemists of ancient Ireland. Some references have them as actual descendants of Danu. It is believed that when the Gaelics invaded Ireland, the Tuatha de Dannan shape shifted to the Sidhe (shee) who are considered the “farey folk” or the Leprechauns of Ireland.
In Irish mythology, Danu is the mother goddess of the Tuatha de Dannan (Old Irish: “The peoples of the goddess Danu”). Though primarily seen as an ancestral figure, some Victorian sources also associate her with the land.

River Vlatva
The Vltava is the longest river in the Czech republic. In ancient time the land was called Bohemia. Both the Czech name Vltava and the German name Moldau are believed to originate from the Old Germanic words “wilt ahwa “(Vltava) is starting its way in the southern part of the Prague, then continues almost straight to the north. In the historic centre of Prague, between the Old and New City.

Vyšehrad is a Castle located in the city of Prague. It was probably built in the 10th century, Local legend holds that Vyšehrad was the location of the first settlement which later became Prague, though thus far this claim remains unsubstantiated.

According to the Harivansha Purana (34.1898) Haihaya was the great grandson of Yadu and grandson of Sahasrajit.
