Defenders of Gate way of India

Robertson’s book “ Kafirs of Hindukush” frequently describe Wai gul valley and Waigul people . Robertson also mentioned Skori gul valley and Pittigul valley in the book. The people of these valleys fought at gate way of India for 1000 years . Is it not our duty to know about them?

Here, I am producing some pagewise references from the book for your ready reference. One can compare facts with facts about people of Wales , Scot and Porugal. The European History says that these celtic people connected with each other since ages. Most of tribes reached their present land after war against Macedonia and Greece . Thereafter they all valiantly continued their fight against Rome.

Wai people

“The Wai people speak a language quite different from
that spoken in Presungul or by the Siah-Posh, and are
a brave, high-spirited race, remarkable for their hospi-
tality, and for their proneness to quarrel. They are
said to be as generous in entertaining guests as the poor
Presungulis are declared to be niggardly and contemp-
tible “( p.81)

Wai

“The Wai men affect white cotton clothes,
and blue and other colours, whenever they can pro-
cure them. There is nothing remarkable about the cut
of the upper garment or shirt and the short wide
trousers. I well remember three splendid-looking men
of this tribe, with high aquiline features, marching up
the Kamdesh hill with a slow, decided, almost stamp-
ing tread, their shoulders thrown back, their chests
expanded, their mouths half opened for easy breathing.
They seemed too proud or indifferent to show the
slightest curiosity on meeting me. They wore white
cotton shirts and trousers, and had blue shawls carried
over the shoulders, the Aveather being hot. I have
also seen Wai men on one or two occasions in goat-
skin coats, or wrapped in the blue shawls made from
Afghan turbans ; but I have no recollection of any
distinctive thick garment, nor of any peculiar blanket.”

Tribe map of kafiristan. Kafirs: who faught at gate way of India for 1000 years

Now I provide you link which carry facts about waugul. Pl read the facts carefully and compare the facts with facts about wales…! The ancient British maps also say you story of Migtration . Now don’t confuse with word “England “ in the map. We have got history of Agnivanshi kahsatriya in Bharatvarsha. Persian tradition transformed the word to “Agni” to “Ingvaeones” and at last The same people were called Anglo when they reached Britain.

Sanatan (eternal)friendship of
Manu and Agni

If we read the History of Foundation of Ayodhya. Then we come across the fact that Agni was Friend to Manu. Agni came to Ayodhya to meet Manu. British history says that still that sanatan tradition of Friendship prevail. Is it not Sanatan?

Now about welsh (Wai Gul?)

The Anglo -Saxon word for ‘foreign’ or ‘foreigner’ was Waelisc and a ‘foreign(er’s) land’ was called Waalas. The modern English forms of these words with respect to the modern country are Welsh (the people) and Wales (the land), respectively.

British map voew

Map shows welsh(Wai gul) and Scotland (Skorigul)

Historically in Britain the words were not restricted to modern Wales or to the Welsh but were used indiscriminately to refer to anything that the Anglo-Saxons associated with Celtic Britons, including other foreign lands (e.g., Cornwall), places once associated with Celtic Britons (e.g., Walworth in County Durham and Walton in West Yorkshire), the surnames of people (e.g., Walsh and Wallace) and various other things that were once new and foreign to the Anglo-Saxons (e.g., the Walnut). None of these historic usages is necessarily connected to Wales or the Welsh.
Etymology of Cymru
The modern Welsh name for themselves is Cymry, and Cymru is Welsh for “Land of the Cymry”. The etymological origin of Cymry is from the Brythonic word combrogi, meaning “fellow-countrymen”.

The Latinised forms of these names are Cambrian or Cambric (meaning “Welsh”) and Cambria (meaning “Wales”). They survive as lesser-used alternative names for Wales, Welsh and the Welsh people. Examples include the Cambrian mountains (which cover most of Wales), the newspaper “Cambrian news”, as well as the organisations Cambrian Airways,Cambrian Railways and Cambrian Archaeological Association.

Now again read legend or story of kafiristan. Let us again go to Book –“ kafir of Hindukush”.Here we shall read about coming of Krumai in Hindikush .

“The following are better stories, (i.) Imrd and all the
prophets (the narrator of this story was a Persian-speak-
ing Kafir, who used the Persian word for prophet to
denote all the gods except Imni) were seated one day
at the mouth of the valley up which runs a road from
the Skorigul to the Presungul. The goddess Krumai,
in the shape of a goat, came over from Tirich Mir ^ and
went among them, but none recognised her except Imra,
who took an opportunity, when she was not looking, to
push her into the mountain-stream. Struggling out of
the water, Krumai ran diagonally up the steep rock,
leaving the marks still visible in a vein of mineral of a
colour different from the rest of the rock. When she
got to the top she began kicking down showers of stones
on to the gods below, to their great annoyance. Imra
told them that the goat was Krumai, and added that he
alone had been clever enough to discover that fact. On
hearing this they all adjured Krumai to behave better.
She thereupon assumed her proper shape, came down
amongst them, and subsequently entertained them all at .

1 Tirich Mir is a sacred mountain. At Badawan (Ahmad Diwami) there
is a small square erection in the usual Kafir style, like the Pedestal of an effigy. This is surmounted by what is said to be a model of Tirich Mir. Before this curious shrine goats are sacrificed to the gods and fairies suj:)- posed to live on the mountain.”(P- 384 )

Skorigul and scotland

Robertson give little information about Skorigul valley. He mentioned that…..
skorigul

“We remained together at his fort for
several days, after which he escorted me up the Skorigul
in defiance of Pshowar people, but had to confess his in-
ability to take me anywhere else without several months’
previous preparation and tribal negotiation.”(p. 338)

So in the book we Do not find much description of Skorigul valley and its inhabitants.

Look at Scotland…

Scotland

Scoti or Scotti was the generic name used by the Romans to describe those who sailed from Ireland to conduct raids on Roman Britain. It was thus synonymous with the modern term Gaels. In the 5th century, these raiders established the kingdom of Dai Riata along the west coast of Scotland. As this kingdom expanded in size and influence, the name was applied to all its subjects – hence the modern terms Scot, Scotish and Scotland.
The origin of the word Scoti or Scotti is uncertain. Charles Oman derives it from the Gaelic word Scuit (a man cut-off), suggesting that a Scuit was not a general word for the Gael but a band of outcast raiders. In the 19th century Aonghas MacCoinnich of Glasgow proposed that Scoti was derived from the Gaelic word Sgaothaich. It has also been suggested that it comes from the Greek word skotos meaning darkness.
Scotland takes its name from Scotus which in Latin translates into Irishman (masculine form of Scoti). This is in reference to the Gaelic settlers from Ireland which was named Scotia (feminine form of Scoti) during this Epoch. The settlers from Ireland in nowadays Scotland were known as Scoti.

Askot (Assi Kot)

Surprisingly there is Askot near Pithorgarh..Askot means Assi (Eighten) Kots. The link will help to know about Askot

Now let us look straight Pittigul facts.

Pittigul / Portugal/ Pithorgarh

Robertson mentioned Pittigul frequently. He mentioned that..

– “ We travelled by Aiiin and the Kalash village of Bom-
boret, and thence over a comparatively low but steep pass
to the Kafir valley of Pittigul. We reached Kamdesh on
October i, having been somewhat delayed on our journey
by certain occurrences.” (p-49)

– “On the 26th October we crossed the Parpit Pass into the Kafir
valley of Pittigul. This pass is not very high, being
under 14,000 feet, but it is said by the Kafirs to be
notorious for giving people headaches.” (p-53)

– “ The Pittigul Valley, into which we had crossed from
the Bomboret Valley of Chitral, runs down from a ridge
traversed by a road called by the Kdfirs the Manjam
Pass, which leads to the country of the Lutdeh people,
of whom the chief is Kan Mara, already referred to. At
its lower end the Pittigul Valley debouches into the
Bashgul Valley, its waters flowing into the Bashgul
river on its left bank, about four miles from Kamu as
the crow flies. At the upper part the valley is rough
and stony. Lower down the road is merely a track
bordering the stream of a narrow, greatly winding valley,
which runs down between steep, in places almost vertical,
rocky slopes. “.(p-58)

“High up in the Pittigul Valley the bridges are un-
important. They consist merely of one or two poles
stretched across the stream and placed on convenient
supporting stones. Lower down, where the stream in-
creases in breadth, they are more carefully constructed.
The superior variety are all built on a rough cantilever
principle, which reaches its highest development at a
bridge over the Pittigul river close to its mouth, and
is identical in form with the best bridges in the Bashgul
Valley.” (p-58)
Now know about Portugal…….

Portugal

Portugal’s name derives from the Roman name Portus Cale. Cale was the name of an early settlement located at the mouth of the Douro River, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean in the north of what is now Portugal. Around 200 BC, the Romans took the Iberian Peninsula from the Carthagians during the Second Punic war, and in the process conquered Cale and renamed it Portus Cale (Port of Cale). During the Middle Ages, the region around Portus Cale became known by the Suevi and Visigoths as Portucale. The name Portucale evolved into Portugale during the 7th and 8th centuries, and by the 9th century, that term was used extensively to refer to the region between the rivers Douro and Minho, the Minho flowing along what would become the northern border between Portugal and Spain. By the 11th and 12th century, Portugale was already referred to as Portugal.

Cale (Caladunum) and Gaia

The etymology of the name Cale is mysterious, as is the identity of the town’s founders. Some historians have argued that Greeks were the first to settle Cale and that the name derives from the Greek word kallis , ‘beautiful’, referring to the beauty of the Douro valley. Still others have claimed that Cale originated in the language of the Gallaeci people indigenous to the surrounding region (see below). Others argue that Cale is a Celtic name like many others found in the region. The word cale or cala, would mean ‘port’, an ‘inlet’ or ‘harbour,’ and implied the existence of an older celtic harbour. Others argue it is the stem of Gallaecia. Another theory claims it derives from Caladunum.

In any case, the Portu part of the name Portucale became Porto, the modern name for the city located on the site of the ancient city of Cale at the mouth of the Douro River. And Port became the name in English of the wine from the Douro Valley region around Porto. The name Cale is today reflected in Gaia (Vila Nova de Gaia), a city on the left bank of the river.

Korkoi –Capitan city of Pandyan

Korkai (8°40’N; 78°5’E) is a small village in the SRivaikuntum Taluk of Thoothukudi district in Tamil Nadu ,India.. It was called as Pandya-Kavada in Ramayana and the Mahabharata, and as Kapatapuram in Kalithogai. It is situated about 3 km north of the Thamirabarani River and about 6 km from the shore of Bay of Bengal. Korkai was the capital, principal center of trade and important port of the Early Pandyan KIngdom.

Kolkoi or Cale?

The Pandyas were one of the three small Dhravidian races that occupied the southern extremity of India. Around 700 BC, Dhravidians must have penetrated into S.India and organized themselves into distinguishable communities. Titles such as Solan, Pandiyan, and Keralas proves the existence of such a community. Early Pandyan Kingdom comprised the greater part of modern Madura and Tinnevelly district during 1st century AD. Their original capital was at Kolkoi (on the Thambraparny river in Tinnevelly) and later at Madura. Ashokan edicts of 3rd Century BC mentions of Pandyas. Kongu Ratta inscription of early 5th century AD recorded the conflict of Pandyas with Kongu Rattas. Not much is known about Pandyas then onwards until 7th century AD. Cheras, possibly remained as allies of Pandyas for a larger period than the Cholas. The dependence with Cholas and Cheras allowed them to continue free movement and trade along the coast of SriLanka. Around 940 AD, Rajaraja Chola reduced the Pandyas to a condition of tributary dependence and the position continued for the next two centuries.

Second link to Pandyan

Gaia / ThadAdagai

It so happened that at that time in South India there was a Pandyan King called Malayadhwaja Pandiyan ruling a small city by the name Manavur, which was quite near to this Shivalinga. He was the son of Kulashekara Pandyan. He came to know about the Shivalinga and decided to build a huge temple for Shiva in the forest Kadambavanam (vanam means forest). He also developed the region into a fine princely state called Madurai.
The king was childless and sought an heir for the Kingdom. Shiva granted him his prayers through an Ayonija child (one born not from the womb). This child was three years old and actually the incarnation of goddess Parvati the consort of Shiva. She was born with fish-shaped eyes. It was said that the extra breast would disappear when she met her future husband. She was named M?nachchi, (meaning fish eyed) from the words m?na (meaning fish) and ak?i (meaning eyes). M?nakshi also means “the one who has eyes like that of a fish”.
Silapadikaram, an ancient post sangam Tamil literature, describes the Goddess Minakshi as ThadAdagai Pratiyar a warrior Goddess, with a crescent moon on her matted hair, with two arms the left holding a lotus and the right holding a sword. She is described as having the right side in crimson colour and the left in dark colour – ArdhanAri form. Minakshi Devi does not directly occur in the Lalita Sahasranama, though there is a reference to it in chalan meenabha lochana. Her eyes are fabled to bring life to the unborn.
The stotram Minakshi Pancha Ratnam (five jewels of Minakshi) is an incantation to her. There are several other great hynms on the goddess, composed in the later centuries by many saints and scholars including the famous Neelakanta Dikshitar.
